richardtf created the topic: amazon sword plant

hi guys! i have question about my amazon sword pant, i have a 90gal community tank with crushed coral mix pool filter sand as substrate my lighting is florescent zoomed 50/50 ( 6hrs a day on) My problem is that since planting, the outermost leaves had turned brown, with a few darker spots.

Questions:
1. is my lighting not adequate?
2. i am i using the wrong bulb?
3. Do i need some kind of fertilizer?
4. Since i have live plants can i turn on my light for 10 to 20hrs a day?

thanks

hi, from my experience with swords they don't need a lot of lights .. i'm using a t8 (6500k / 1400k) combo which they seem to enjoy. I've recently added seachem excel into the mix ~ they are looking better....

what output is your light?

I would wait for Ken to answer since he's the plant guy...

those swords looks good ...

is it new to the tank? if so, it might need time to accustom to your water. when ever i add a new plant to my tank, the leaves turns brown like yours...but give it few days ... it'll bloom.

the height isn't an issue ... there are other methods you can try:

root tabs
CO2
miracle soil

introducing plants is always a hassle, most plants come in emersed forms, so when they go to submersed form they will lose their initial leaves and new ones will grow. i've had this in 2 tanks, i do add co² and fertilizer (easylife profito). i only use T8 and my plants are flourishing under 5400k and under 6500k. even my shrimp tank with a 10000k lamp is able to grow plants.

like the setup ... very clean...

we weren't talking about how long your tank was established ... was regarding the new plants in the tank...sometimes new plants will go through a process of getting use to the water change....
