i have a MASSIVE conglomeration of this floating around in my 29g planted goldfish tank. so i'll let you know what i've learned from my experience:
1. rooting it isn't really necessary since it does just as well as a floating plant. but if you'd like to have it planted simply shove one side into the gravel and wait. mine [with the help of special plant-growing lights and substrate] took off in a little less than a month. where in that short time one strand managed to span from one end of the tank to the other!
2. once it's established the thing's a BEAST! i've chopped clippings off for coworkers and pulled out vicarious strands it randomly sprouted and that hasn't even come /close/ to slowing it down!
suffice it to say i started with a six inch tall bundle of hornwort about four months ago and am now battling a 3 foot long green swath that's trying to take over my tank!
the only problems i've ever had with it is that if one little strand dies. it falls apart into all these little tiny needles that become a menace to clean. but other than that it's a really fun and easy plant to care for!
hope that helps!!
