Hi, as a big surprise I woke up 3 days ago and found hundreds of eggs on the flat stone.. I ran to this page and read all your advice, separate them from the main tank, put them in a 30x20x20 cm plastic tank, air stone under the flat rock , methlyn blue etc... Success ! Some hours ago the first ones started to hatch. So i know i don't need to feed them for a couple of days but how long can i keep them in this plastic bowl? There is no filtering system in there, just an air stone and the water started to smell strong. I ve got a second tank with an external filter which i can prepare for them but what if they get sucked up by the filter..? Shall i wait for all of them to hatch or start to carry the tiny ones which hatched already to the other tank? Thank you..

Great!! Really good to see another successful hatching amongst our members. As soon as the eggs hatch, the new fry will start producing ammonia so you will need to move them into a filtered tank where the water is always kept in good condition.

Ok...I have just done this...I have about 700 month old Oscars.

You wont need to feed them until their egg sack is exhausted, which took mine about 4 days after hatching.

The filter will indeed suck them in, but for the time being the fry won't swim higher than about a cm until about day 6 so unless the suction is strong enough to pull them in, you have a few days to get a sponge filter from your lfs, then use that.

You will also need Prime by sachem - you will be doing a lot of water changes and Prime is a great conditioner that also fixes ammonia and nitrates / nitrites.

With the tank, how big is it? I kept mine in a little goldfish tank until they were about 2 weeks old because you will be feeding them very small food and they have small mouths and nil to limited eye sight. if your tank is too big they cannot find their food and you will have to put in a higher concentration which is no good for your water.

I can tell you heaps more as the fry grow about food etc...for now..is there anything else you want to know?
