xxxkarloxxx created the topic: My experience with smooth ceramic tile

Yesterday my oscars ¨laid¨ eggs on a smooth piece of ceramic tile, however, the surface was so smooth that the eggs didn´t stay on the surface for too long, even the delicate movement of the couple made most of the eggs to fall down from the ceramic tile.

I don´t know if you have had any experience like this; I think a flat rock could have worked better because it´s flat but not smooth like glass.

By the way after 3 hours, they ate all the eggs, I guess they didn´t get fertilized because they were not on the tile anymore but trapped in the substrate :(

I guess I´ll have to wait 2 months again and I´ll be better prepared

It was my first Oscar spawn, I´ve had no problems with my green terror because they layed eggs on a small flat rock, so I thought it was a good idea to use a ceramic tile as I read a lot of articles stating ¨smooth surface¨, maybe it worked for some, but I just try to give advice based on my own experience :).

In the case of green terrors the eggs are kind of ¨sticked¨ to the rock. I thought it was going to happen with my oscars, but the eggs were like flying away, maybe because of the smooth material, and yes, it was sooo frustrating, didn´t sleep and got no babies :(

Sorry about my english, I´m from Lima-Perú, and I just try to get advice from you because I love big american cichlids, specially Oscars.

Sorry it didn`t work out for your O`s but at least you know you have a pair that will breed so it`s just a waiting game now till they do their thing again. If you turn the tile over so the glazed side is down that might help.

Nothing wrong with your english either :)

My O's chose the epoxiresin background, as far away as possible from the plecos, and the eggs were attached quite good.
they stayed away from the slate, that was in "Pleco-territory". ;)

good luck, next time.

there are times this things really happen but even if eggs are not on the slate,
it may still hatch if properly fertilized...

no,, try to turn the slate,, your o may spawn again in ten days...
