Theaggressiveoscar created the topic: Are my oscars sexually mature?

lately I have been seeing my albino, and tiger oscar rubbing up against each other and vibrating....it's rather odd......their heads twitch and so do their fins and tail, and the tiger oscar changes color from black with red to a light and smooth orange. They are less than a year old, and does this mean I got a male and a female? how would a mix between albino and tiger oscar look like?
They can breed, right?after all they are oscars?

Yes, that is definitely signs of courtship, however they are probably not quite mature at the moment. You will find that fish will behave like this, they can often participate in this strange behaviour for years and nothing will ever happen, it all depends on whether or not you have a male and a female Two females may well act as if they are male and female, Oscars sure are strange and can confuse the hell out of you sometimes.

It's quite a good sign so just keep an eye on what happens. Next time you see them doing this, have a good look underneath each fish, see if you can see anything that looks as though it's sticking out, if they are approaching maturity, or mature, then the chances are you will see an egg tube, or maybe the males organ

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)

now they are lip locking!does that mean they are male and female or there's still the possibility that they are the same sex? I tried to take a peek underneath them and couldn't see anything.
Now i'm scared, I don't know how to deal with fish fry :( what if they kill their tank mates to protect their fry?!

Such are the risks involved in keeping a pair of cichlids.

THOSE WHO REFUSE KNOWLEDGE ARE DOOMED TO FAIL.

WATER CHANGES ARE THE LIFEBLOOD OF THIS HOBBY. IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE SO OR SIMPLY DON'T FEEL LIKE DOING THEM, RE-HOME YOUR FISH, SELL YOUR AQUARIUM & FIND ANOTHER HOBBY, AS YOU WILL FAIL UTTERLY, COMPLETELY, & MISERABLY.

you can always divide the tank, just put in something to seperate the oscars from the rest of the fish as soon as you see they are laying eggs. i haven't had any casualties in my tank but my oscars do tend to eat their eggs if they think the eggs are being threatened...

Dont worry about the Lip / Jaw lock that is Normal. Sometimes it very well can be a Territorial thing as well.

DRACO replied the topic: Re: Are my oscars sexually mature?

courtship, lip locking, and egg laying are not assurance that you will
have a babies.... but egg laying can also happen for a single female oscar
but hatching is a different story.... and very frustrating to wait if you
had seen eggs already.

yes, less than a year old is to early to tell if they are pair...
and lip locking sometimes is very worrisome too when you are seeing
torn lip or scales...

be ready with a divider just in case!
