aaronblove created the topic: do i have a breeding pair?

I know its really hard to tell but can't help but be curious. Figured someone out there with some breeding experience could maybe help me out. I just got my two Oscars about a month and a half ago from PETCO and I've noticed them laying at the bottom of the tank twitching I've read this is a good sign when finding a mating pair. Also they don't seem to share food. The albino seems to wait till the tiger is full b4 eating and doesn't eat no where near as much as the tiger. Just thought their eating patterns were a bit strange. Ill put a picture on my page. Keep in mind they are the same age and side by side. Huge difference in size.

how big are they? You can't know until they're sexually mature (or close to) - around eight inches or so.

Way too young, they're probably 3-4 inches i'm guessing.

Like Nina said, you won't know until they're older, probably around the 1 year mark or so.

So my answer is no, until later in their life.

Oscars live on their stomachs, just continue to offer food, but no more than they can both manage to eat in 3 minutes.

With juveniles like that, you can feed them twice a day, but like I said, don't leave excess food in the tank. If you do, that will create water quality issues.

If you notice that the one seems to be getting out competed for food, you could put in a divider and feed them separately to ensure each is getting a fair share, this could also encourage the more timid fish to become more aggressive about food.
