I had a 180 gallon tank with a mated pair of oscars and everything was going awesome till about a week or so after the babies hatched they solwly all died and never could figure it out. Talked to my local pet store and did everything they said but no luck. Fed them brine shrimp took them out of the 180 and put into a 10 gallon of same water. Can anyone help? Will oscars breei in a 90 gallon tank?

Thanks
Mark

It is a little difficult to say what went wrong. For the first three days you don't need to feed the fry because they have a yolk sac. Removing the young to a smaller tank is certainly a good idea as it reduces the chance of the fry being eaten by other fish. Water conditioning plays a huge part in whether the young will survive or not. If they are exposed to ammonia and the chances are they will all die. Did you cycle a 10 gallon tank before you put the fry in? Also, what a live show and that you are feeding them? Apart from that, it's difficult to say really. It is very common for most of the fry to perish in the first few days. Obviously if you are a professional fish breeder then this may not be the case but since this is your first time, I'm not really surprised that this happened.

Whereas I wouldn't advocate recommend keeping to the adult Oscars in a 90 gallon tank permanently, it is worth a try because I've heard that fish breeders do use smaller tanks when breeding. However this is probably only due to the fact that having lots of big tanks takes up too much room, I doubt whether it would actually increase the chances of Fry survival.

i just thaught oscars were cool and got a 180 gallon tank and they did thier thing so i tried to make the best of it. I hatched probably 5000 of them and only got one to about one inch long.

Thanks,

Mark

i totally concur with OFL. better luck next time.
90 or 180 gal will be fine for breeding. just make ready
your evacuation tank for the fry when hatch. just keep your
tank the way it is when they first spawned. there are times they
will spawn again in 16 to 30 days. and will go on regularly if
not disturbed in their tank.

when my oscar lays their eggs, i never bother them for a
while. since they do not take any food on that period, i do
not feed them until they approach the glass and beg for foods.
in doing so, i lessen the biolaod, and i did not disturb thier
hatchlings.

if you are serious in breeding, a hatchling tank should be ready
and running before hand. that is the way i goes in having successful
breeding. in my case, i am not yet ready, so i let my angel fish
feast on the wiggler.
