claude3rd created the topic: Is it love?

I need help... I added another O to my tanks about 2 weeks ago. The two fish were getting along fine, swinning together and all the "your my BFF" stuff. I come downstairs to my den a week later, turn on the light and do the AM feeding and the lutino in hiding under my main piece of driftwood. I put some food in and observe... the lutino come out of hiding and eats with the tiger and other fish... they square off ( 2 on a scale of 1 to 10)and goes back to hiding. I watch the tank for another 2hrs and most of the time the lutino hid but did come out now and then. The lutino is about 5 1/2in and the tiger is around 5in. So...

they're too small for it to be love, it's territorial aggression.

It seems like there's a clear loser in this case as well.

Do you have a plan to move forward? What size tank are they in?

They are in a 180g tank with 7 SD and a blue acara. I thought it was aggression too but its the mildest I have ever seen with cichlids. I guess the Tiger will have to go... I had such hope after the first couple of weeks.

you can try separating them, and feeding the smaller one more, the bigger one less, until they're more evenly matched - then try again?

Or the whole 'catch fish, shuffle tank, re-introduce fish'?

you could also give it a bit of time, and see what happens. If no fish is getting hurt, they might sort it out?

I'm sorry it's not working out. Remember that what you see during the day or while you're watching is not a reflection of what happens when you're away/late at night.

The bigger one is the Lutino... there has not been any injuries so I will give it a few more days. This is also a good excuse to build/setup a 55g double tank setup that is going to be my next project.
