People generally get around 6 or so because it is hard to sex them. This way you have a pretty good chance of ending up with a pair. If you do decide to go this route you need to make sure that the place you get them from would be willing to take back the extra Oscars , that you will be able to rehome them elsewhere , or that you have some spare tanks ready to go. You also need a fairly large tank to house those Oscars until you seperate them.

Here is a link that may help as well...

You need 6 fish because you can't tell 100% if you have male or female by just looking at them or watching their behavior. Both males and females look the same, and generally act the same. The only way to tell 100% that you have a female is if you see the female lay the eggs or the breeding tube drops. The only way to tell 100% that you have a male is if you see the male fertilize the eggs or the breeding spike drops.

if i wanted to be serious about trying. i would get 6-7 juvis from different sources. i would allow them to mature and pair off, and then make an educated guess and keep 2.

now the problem with this method is sometimes Oscars don't get to sexual maturity until late. thus meaning you will have too many oscars in too small of a tank for too long. .... so definitely how to balance this issue and make a guess.

start with as big a tank as you can manage, seems to be the general consensus.
