The jack dempsey fry i kept to raise ended up being a female and has been sporting some breeding colors here lately. Where she normally avoids the Oscar, she will now swim up to him when her breeding colors are showing and start the body twitching i used to see her parents do when they would start to breed. So first question: does she know my O is a male and is wanting to breed, or is she just acting on instinct? And 2nd: IF my O is a male will he try to fertilize the eggs and if so will they even hatch?

the only way possible is by doing it artificially...
collecting the eggs of the JD and fertilized it manually
by squeezing the belly of the male... i've seen it done by
the japanese with their koi!

I wonder though Paul if the sperm of an Oscar can even fertilize the eggs of the JD or any other fish other than an Oscar??

that is also what i am worried.... however seeing how my FH do their thing
and seeing too how my oscars do their thing, they both do it the same way
thus i believe it is possible...

If it could've been done, someone in the Asiatic market would've done it by now....look @ all the freaky mutant fish that have come out of that part of the world....they're mad scientists!!  Plus, that would be a real money maker....

THOSE WHO REFUSE KNOWLEDGE ARE DOOMED TO FAIL.

WATER CHANGES ARE THE LIFEBLOOD OF THIS HOBBY. IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE SO OR SIMPLY DON'T FEEL LIKE DOING THEM, RE-HOME YOUR FISH, SELL YOUR AQUARIUM & FIND ANOTHER HOBBY, AS YOU WILL FAIL UTTERLY, COMPLETELY, & MISERABLY.

That's pretty much exactly what I was thinking Jack. Someone would've at least experimented with it along the way. I personally don't think the Oscar sperm is compatible with any other eggs other than Oscar eggs and vice versa...

@Jason and Jack, i will try to do that experimentation sooner....
i have two healthy female oscars and healthy male FH... i will
to squeeze their belly to find out if they gonna squirt that sperm...
extracting eggs from the female is easier as shown in the nat.geo.

i had seen this process cross breeding the koi and the catfish...
resulting into a catfish with a color like a koi;

i will be your MAD FISH SCIENTIST lol!

I wonder if that's where the "Peacock Oscars" I've seen came from... I've seen them twice in local fish stores a very dark olive/black oscar with blue spots.. anyone else ever seen these?
