Fish Lady created the topic: Oscar, in Bare Bottom Tank

Hi, I haven't had an Oscar in many years, but just got a new Lutino Oscar for Mothers Day. I bred Fresh water Angelfish for many years, and decided to give up raising angelfish and go back to having an Oscar.

He is about 3 inches long and in a barebottom 30 gallon tank. I have a cycled square sponge filter on the bottom of the tank so it won't cycle on me until my power filter kicks in. Does anyone else have an Oscar in a bare bottom tank. Also want to put something in with him, not more fish, but want to keep it easy to keep his tank clean. I test a couple times a week and all tests are good. He will be going into a 55 gallon tank over the next month.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

bare bottom is a preference and bare bottom better for cleanliness and cleaning ease. I believe Master Fish Keeper Tom has bare bottoms on all tanks... even the 780 gallon? Many others do. I am sure Tom and others will chim in..... Rock might have bare bottom tanks as well??? Draco and Streetsmart as well?

If you haven't purchased the 55g yet, I would go to a 75g or 90g. With big fish, comes big water changes.

Bare bottom tank, without the bare bottom look

I agree with rock go bigger if possible, i prefer pool filter sand as a substrate because all the waste sits on top like bare bottom but it still looks nice.

Welcome to the forum, i also breed freshwater angels B)

A 75 or a 90 gallon isn't an option. The biggest I can go is a 55 gallon. I am retired and this is my water puppy, and I don't have to take him to the vets or get him licensed or buy large bags of dog food. I am also raising live disease free fancy guppies to feed him a snack once in awhile. At this point I am feeding him Hikari Staple mini Pellets, and Hikari Gold Pellets for his color. I haven't tried any other foods at this point. If you have any suggestions as to what else I can feed him, I'm open to hear.

Thank you so much for your help!

if all you can get is a 55 that will be fine but two things;

1. No other tankmates is advisable.
2. Be prepared for more frequent water changes as he gets bigger. Let nitrates be your guide (wc at 20) but my guess that two 50%wc or greater a week might be your proper protocol at some point in the 55.
