I've got two beautiful 11'' oscars who go through the breeding ritual lay eggs both circle the rock over an over then defend the eggs a day later eat them. This has happened twice I have heard that two females can go through all the motions. But what I would like to know is about venting my oscars I can see thier vents very good the one that I know is female her vent is much larger then her anus. The one in question's vent is larger than his anus but near as large as hers. They are going through thier breeding rituals now and are about to spawn I heard that this was the best time to try and vent them. Is my males vent suppose to be larger thean his anus? Is there any other tricks to venting?

Sounds like two females, or the male is not fertilizing. You should get some fry if they are both doing their part.

what you can also do to see if they are male female is take the slate with eggs out, put it in a container of tankwater, add methylene blue, wait for about 72 hours and if they develop then you have a couple :)

160 gallon south american
190 gallon malawi

The last time they spawned I caught her in the act of eating the eggs so I tried to save some and removed the rock and put them in a bucket with tank water and bubbler but the heater I put in there was malfunctioning and they devolped fungus and I got rid of them. Next time I will try the blue I belived them to be fertilized because the eggs were tan in color but I could have been wrong.
