big wide tube: female
small thorny tube: male

that being said, those fish have been stunted severely, being in too small of an aquarium.. an oscar that age should be closing in on 12-13" and 2 oscars should be kept in a 90 gallon bare minimum if you want to have decent water values.
i say 90g because this is a couple, unknown sexes would require at least a 125 for 2 specimens.

share with us your watertest results:
ammonia, nitrite and nitrate level.

if any of these are out of bounds, no single egg will hatch anyway

160 gallon south american
190 gallon malawi

If there is a distinct difference between the two protrusions then yes, you've probably got a male and female. As stated above, the females actually had is often creamy white colour with a blunt oval shaped end. The females sex organ looks just like a small spike that you wouldn't want sticking in your finger. Having said that, your tank is gracefully too small for even one Oscar. If they decide to start breeding then you are in all sorts of trouble. Please upgrade ASAP

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)

today my oscar (with big papila) is protecting a place on the granite slate. it is just hovering over that area and moving away the intruder sucker cat( algae eater). is she ready to lay eggs or i have to wait more.

Egg bound females look like they have a round stomach.

I have seen this video......it's bunk. The only 100% reliable way to sex Oscars is to vent them. I have seen females w/ long pointed dorsal & anal fins, & males w/ blunt ones.

THOSE WHO REFUSE KNOWLEDGE ARE DOOMED TO FAIL.

WATER CHANGES ARE THE LIFEBLOOD OF THIS HOBBY. IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE SO OR SIMPLY DON'T FEEL LIKE DOING THEM, RE-HOME YOUR FISH, SELL YOUR AQUARIUM & FIND ANOTHER HOBBY, AS YOU WILL FAIL UTTERLY, COMPLETELY, & MISERABLY.

Well, yeah.......it's a 50-50 shot.....it isn't @ all reliable.....hell, anybody could look @ a LG Oscar & go "Well, that may be a male/female".....sorry, this is a pet peeve of mine..... :pinch:

I have also heard some "experts" state things like males get bigger/more "eye spots", get broader, etc. None of these is a reliable indicator of sex......I usually wait until they lay eggs....with a fish of breeding size, no mistaking when the vents come out who's who. B)
