your overstocked and you're water changes are insufficient if you think about it each oscar only has 75 gallons then you add some catfish and now your heavily stocked then you throw a arowana that can grow to 3 feet in their

you should be doing at least 50% water changes twice weekly and personally i would be looking to rehome the arowana before he outgrows the tank

Don't dwell on what went wrong. Instead focus on what to do next

You should strongly consider re-homing a few of those fish....your heart is in the right place, but that's a lot of bio-load, & is putting a tremendous strain on the filtration....plus, overcrowding causes stress, which diminishes the fishes slime coat, which lowers a fishes ability to fight disease/parasites....& as stated, you should step up the WC's....every 2-3 weeks is insufficient, your nitrates will be very high, that's part & parcel of the biological proscess. 75% 1X per week minimum. Do you have a Python WC device?

I would do a 75% WC today along w/ a thorough gravel vacuuming.....absolutely the best thing that can be done to maintain fish in prime condition.

What is your filtration set-up?

THOSE WHO REFUSE KNOWLEDGE ARE DOOMED TO FAIL.

WATER CHANGES ARE THE LIFEBLOOD OF THIS HOBBY. IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE SO OR SIMPLY DON'T FEEL LIKE DOING THEM, RE-HOME YOUR FISH, SELL YOUR AQUARIUM & FIND ANOTHER HOBBY, AS YOU WILL FAIL UTTERLY, COMPLETELY, & MISERABLY.
