So we now have a new section all about breeding our favourite fish. The ultimate sight for any Oscar owner has got to be the sight of hundreds of fry swimming around the parents. So come on lets have your trials and tribulations on breeding Oscars and we will do our best to answer any questions you have.

Cool, that's neat. I've never breed oscars before, although I've breed a bunch of other fish including livebearers, anabantoids, cichlids, barbs, minnnows, and gouramis.

However, with the information from this section, I mine as well.

But first I have to figure out how, then build my 500g tank in which I will be breeding them...

So our oscars have been doing the cleaning of the rock ritual, and making pits beside the slate, for about a week now. I was wondering how long they do this, before they might produce eggs. by the way, I have put 15 photos of our oscars in the member photo gallery.

Oscars will only breed when they are good and ready. There are things that you can do to encourage them to spawn but at the end of the day it is up to them. To help trigger spawning you can try feeding them each day with live food for about a week. Try river shrimps worms meal worms or any other live food that is available. Then let them fast for a couple of days. Do a slightly larger water change with cooler water so that the temperature drops around 4 degrees. then let the water heat up and again start feeding them live food. If they are a good pair and the water is good then this may encourage them to spawn. As fish keepers the biggest asset that we can have is patience Oscars will only spawn when they are good and ready!!!As a footnote I would never try to breed Oscars with other fish in the tank, it is highly likely that the Oscars will see them as a threat to the eggs and will eat them rather than waste their time and energy raising a batch of fry that have a good chance of being eaten by other fish in the tank. All the Oscar spawnings that i have had have taken place in the afternoon so if you are out to work till after 5pm then you may miss the spawning and the subsequent eating of the eggs.

Thank you so much for the advise. We will try this, and keep you posted. Luckily, I get off work at 1:00 PM everyday.
