Well, I finally got what I have been waiting on for about a year. My Oscars laid eggs today for the first time. Now I'm worried about two things. First off, I want the babies to live, but am afraid they will likely die (especially having 1st time parents -which means the 2 Oscars & me). what I'm worried about more is if they actually make it. I have seen photos of Oscar eggs before, but still had no clue there would be this many. There literally must be hundreds on the piece of marble stone I put in the tank for them. Even if only 5 percent made it that would probably be 15 or more Oscars in the household. So, I guess my real question isfor anyone who has successfully bred o's before, and is this: what is the liklihood that any baby o's will live on this first spawn & how many baby o's -on average- live? If they do live then I think everyone in my family is getting an early Christmas present this year.

LMAO Congrats!! Post pics please! I would guess you don't have much to worry about. Most fish end up eating the eggs the first few times... Have the eggs been fertilized? I have a pair of jags and they have eaten the eggs all 4 times they have laid. It is possible but not likely! Good luck and keep us posted!

Here's a pic:

I took a couple, but it's hard to get more. She doesn't appear thrilled to see me next to the glass taking pictures. Like all O's, she's generally ecstatic to see me (make that ecstatic to get fed). I figure I'll leave her alone for now to do whatever mother nature is telling her to do.

Well, the eggs have made it to day 2 without getting eaten. There were a few (very small amount)of them that had fallen off the side of the piece of marble, but they're not there now. I'm not sure if the parents ate the eggs that were on the subtrate/glass or if they put them back on the marble. Either way, both the o's seem to be doing what they're supposed to. They tak turns fanning the eggs & occasionally both fan them, swimming in weird circles around the marble in a head-to-tail fashion. So, maybe there's a chance some of them will hatch.

My Green Sevs are excellent parents...till they decide to eat the eggs or fry...They're on their 6 spawing now and I don't have high hopes anymore, I hope your O's are much better at this !

you should see little tails poking out soon, wiggling around....
my O's have laid twice, first time they ate them, second time they made it to wiggling stage then got eaten by the parents.... im waiting for their third spawn and hoping it will be successful...
