I just bought 6 small 3 inch tiger oscars because this will give me a better chance of getting a mating pair, Then i can move on the other 4. What i need to know is how big will they have to be before they pair up? As i only have them in a small tank at the moment (4ft), I have a bigger tank for the adult pair when they get older but i'm still in the process of selling off its occupents.

they won't truly pair up until they have reached adulthood. Almost 1 year old I think

thats right a large tank is needed to get a pair of oscars. they will pair up when they reach sexual maturity at about 1-1.5 years of age. and at this time they should be around the 10-12 mark.

Nice healthy looking fish you have there. A few years ago I tried the same, puting 6 small oscars in a 4ft tank. Eventually as they got bigger, they started harrasing each
other big time. In the end I gave some away and after a couple of fatalities I ended up with one lovely red oscar. I think yours will have more chance in a 5ft tank. Today, I also bought some oscars. I took a chance and just bought 2, one red and one tiger oscar. I have a 50/50 chance of them being a pair.

Can't oscars be vented like other fish? Just wondering as everyone says it's near on impossible to sex oscars, Are they different to other fish so they can't be vented?

venting with oscars is iffy at best. even an fishkeeper with experienced in venting oscars only has about a 75-80% chance of getting it right. when you consider that you start with 50-50, venting is not much more acurate than guessing. not to mention the stress it puts the fish under holding them upside down outside of the tank.

Nice babies but you better start buying tanks LOL.... You will need several!

Not tried it on Oscars though but unless they are vastly different to every other fish out there then i'm sure i can vent them with a 90+% accuracy, I have been venting fish for over 10 years now so i'm not a novice to it.

I'll have to wait a fair while yet though until they are a lot older though and try get some super size fish bags lol
