TOPIC: are the breeding or fighting

are the breeding or fighting 4 years, 6 months ago #5965

Hi, I am new oscar owner, i recently bought 2 oscars about 5-7 inches long each, i have noticed some lip locking activities and they are viberating their tails especially in the night, but after that they will become normal and live together without and harsh reaction.

Can some one please tell if they are fighting or breding if they are breeding what should i do next.

Please help.

This is certainly not a breeding pair would do. However, lip locking is also a sign of aggression so I shouldn't get too excited just at the moment. Just observe their behaviour for the time being. You'll know it is aggression because they will be fighting all the time and there will be a strong possibility of some quite nasty injuries. Cross that bridge if and when it happens.

I have had oscars smaller than yours squaring up to each other and even lip locking and then going back to normal and swimming around normally. Oscars that breed do lip locking but oscars sorting out their pecking order can also do it. Oscars who just dont get on will fight and damage each other. All you can do is observe and see what happens.

Thank you all for your advise I will keep watching my Oscars for the next few days and will update you guys.

I had one more question if you can answer, I just bought 4 baby oscars 2 tiger and 2 albino, Tigers are about 2-3 inch long and albino is just about 1 inch.

What should I feed them and how should I keep them.

If you look around the site it will tell you how to keep oscars and also what they will eat but some things are cichlid pellets, prawns, maggots, worms, lance fish, krill, meal worms and any insects
