About a month ago i purchased a new 6ft tank. It was originally for 1 oscar that was in a 4ft tank. I then picked up 2 oscars around the same size off a mate so i put all 3 in together. After a fair bit of fighting i put 3 small barra in with them to try slow down the fighting. This worked for a while but then the smaller oscar of the 3 was getting brutally bashed up constantly. After finding it a new home i had the 2 bigger oscars and 3 small barra. Last night i noticed 1 of my oscars had layed eggs, we noticed unusual and weird behaviour but didnt think anything of it. This is there first time and eggs are now all brownish. Its so exciting but i dont know what i should do? Im thinking of just leaving them and whatever ones live then thats a bonus. I had no intension on breeding at all but now that its happening how exciting. Please help?

Welcome to the site

Sounds like they may well be personalised since fertilised eggs turn brown. If you don't want to breed Oscars then just leave them to their own devices. If the eggs hatch successfully then the fry can survive for about three days on their own yolk sac. After then, you'll have to think about feeding them if you want to keep them alive, they probably won't survive if you leave them in the tank with the rest of the fish so they would have to be removed and put in a receptacle on their own.

Whatever you do, why not post some photos for us

just keep up what you are doing and leave it there as it is. if they
hatch and survived, lucky for you, if they don't, no problem at all.

btw, welcome to the site

Sorry for the late reply. I tried putting photos up but didnt have any success with the uploading for some reason. After the o's laid eggs majority of them were fertilized but unfortunetly they only lasted 2 days then got eaten by my barramundi. Later i investigated this and found i should have left a lamp on in the room due to there bad eyes at night. A few days after that they were back to normal and water conditions were all perfect then just the end of last week i see like a white slime all over them and over there eyes partially(barra aswell) and i researched and was going to treat them for fungus but then after more last minute research and more studying of the fish the symptoms were more pushing towards internal parasytes. Symptoms included white/stringy/clear sort of poo and the fish were having troubles staying up right and really lathargic. But always still had an appetite. So i decided to try aquarium salt and i done that to the right measurements and then 2 days ago they started gasping fairly badly and its very unlike my fish to do this. So i had to take it a step further and i purchased some pimafix and started the medication. They are now onto there 2nd day of medication and they seem alot better. No more gasping and there swimming around alot more. But they still have the white slime. Fingers are crossed. I would hate to loose them now after just finding out there a love pair. This is the first time using pimafix and i hope i made the right choice. What are your thoughts? Should i keep adding the pimafix daily like it says? because 50ml of pimafix a day is a fair bit?

Is there an airstone in the tank?

we need your water paramaters, nitrite, ammonia and nitrate. please post your results. it doesn't sound good, so test your water and let us know the results, then do a big water change, at least 50%
Please, for my sake, change your oil!

Yes there is an air stone. Amonia, nitrite and nitrate are all at 0. Water is perfect. I dont believe i should be doing a 50% water change while using pimafix should i?

well, it is usually what i do when there is some unexplained calamity in my tanks.
poor water quality is usually the number one reason for problems. not always though.

it is strange that you would have a 0 for all of the readings, usually nitrate would read something...
how are you testing the water?
Please, for my sake, change your oil!

The other day when i first noticed it i done a big water change but havent touched it since i have been putting in the pimafix. I test the water with a api professional kit. The tank has a cannister filter which has plenty of water flow. Is a bio-filter needed aswell as the cannister? But now that the fish have stopped gasping hopefully they are on the mend. Hopefully pimafix works. I havent had much success using fish medication in the past tho.

the canister is your bio-filter actually, that is where a majority of you beneficial bacteria live and they are your biological filter. basically they turn ammonia into nitite and nitrite to nitrate. so if the tank is properly cycled, the only reading you would have would be nitrate, usually the max amount of nitrate is 40, then it is time to do a water change.
and even after a water change, nitrate would still be present (which is fine),
that's why i am confused about a 0 reading for it.
