I need the birds and bees leason lol on oscars how you tell if you have a male or feamle. Please dont tell me size difference since i only have one and hard to compare lol. i like know if mine male or female is there a way to tell.

No there isnt. The only way to tell is to look at there sexual organs when they spawn.

Its impossible to tell only when they start breeding

The only reliable way of sexing an Oscar is to carry out a procedure called "venting" basically this means inspecting the opening to their sexual organs. Oscars have two holes, the difference is very slight, one of the holes on the female Oscar will be slightly bigger, this is where her egg tube protrudes from. The male Oscars sexual organ is just a small spike so the hole isn't quite as big.

Some people claim to be able to tell the difference just by looking at the Oscars, I would dismiss this as both the male and female look exactly the same.

So since my TO has a little spike sticking out around his butt it means he is a boy?? It would be a good thing since his name is Chief, i wouldn't want to change his name to Chiefette.

I think if your Oscar is constantly on the phone it's a female.
If there's beerbottles lying around it must be male!
In the wild both parents will take an equal share in protecting the young, so they mostly equal in size and appearance.
I wish i could tell what gender mine are, but I'm still in for a surprise.
I just hope they're both females,but time will tell...

So except for venting and egg laying there's no specific male or female behaviour shown by Oscars?
