TOPIC: Oscar's mouth won't fully close

Oscar's mouth won't fully close 1 year, 11 months ago #101258

I've had my Juvenile Oscar for some time now, and the other day I noticed his mouth staying open for longer periods of time than normal. He is able to close it, just not totally..it almost looks like it's growing too fast for the rest of his head to catch up. What can I do?

Looking closely, it looks like his bottom "lip" is bent into a V-shape...I'm not sure if he ran into the wall, or what...

I don't know whether you meant to include a photo in your post but there is not one included in this post. Anyway, is the fish feeding okay? It could well be that he has swam into something, sometimes this happens. At the moment, very difficult to say without seeing a little bit more to go on

Hey, any photos yet? We are here to help if we can.

I forgot to say, I think one of my Oscars slightly dislocated its jaw a few weeks ago. Its bottom looked slightly crooked to the top one. I suspect it probably happened during the night, I often head bangs. If fish are startled then they can sometimes swim into things. On numerous occasions I have seen them whack themselves against the condensation cover, or tank led.

I have seen Oscars before with overshot or undershot jaws...could be that I guess

I would say that as long as the fish can still eat then there really isn't a problem. If the damage is so bad that the fish cannot eat then there's not much he can do.

does the jaw move at the point of the V. I have had 2 oscars that have broken there jaw leaving the bottom jaw in a V that moved. these never healed for me but that doesn't mean it can't. if the fish is feeding your doing well. it could also be a deformed jaw thats fine but just mis shaped?

What is the score with your fish & its jaw? I noticed this morning that you are duplicating questions on here and also another Oscar forum. If you don't need our help regarding this problem then please let us know that we can unsubscribe to this thread if we don't need to keep an eye on it. I've noticed this a couple of times with some of your questions, you don't give us a follow-up on your program which doesn't help anyone.

Let us know what's happening
