I'm not sure if this is a disease or from fighting another fish but i know this isn't a birth defect because this jsut happened this morning. His/her mouth is like crooked to one side.. Can someone help me?

I can't tell you much more than my personal experience, but, mine had a serious tussle with the corner of a filter outlet and split his bottom jaw a bit off of center. Looked as if it healed crooked, but, as you can see from my avatar and pictures of him, it has straightened out over time.

So, I would assume that your Oscar will too eventually heal, and it was most likely from a bad bump or a scuffle with a tank mate.

Hope for the best for your oscar

Lots of oscars are born with a crooked mouth and as they get bigger it shows more. However i had heard of fish ending up with deformed mouths because of injuries. It may get better but then again it may not. I suppose it depends on the type of injury. The important thing is that your oscar can still eat. If he can then the only problem is that he will look a little odd
I can't get no sleep

Not sure if I understand ... is he not able to open his mouth more than the picture? or just keeps opening his mouth very wide?

Could have injured it while you weren't in the room, does anything look moved? rocks, anything heavy in the tank ... or possible on a filter/filter intake?

I do hope your O is ok

Just wanted to add that I just adopted an 8 month old oscar that has a crooked mouth and he can't close it. It stays open constantly and when he eats, the pellets float out of his mouth sometimes. I just put 6 fat Green Emerald Cory Cats in yesterday and until then he would just sit in one corner of the 75 gal tank. Now with the cory's all over the place, so is the oscar. Looks like he'd like to try and eat one...Hope not...

Just been reading about these fish with deformed mouths and was going to reply about the dislocated jaw on an Oscar if anybody remembers that one from like 9 momths ago. When I suddenly realised the thread started more than 3 years ago......

Man,Del, you've been around very long.
But,yeah, this thread is ancient.
