On a recent visit to our LFS, we noticed a baby albino tiger Oscar WITHOUT ANY EYES. It is apparently a birth defect, not the result of an injury. We felt certain he wouldn't live through the pet store experience, so we elected to take him. He is about 1 1/2" long and we feel like if he has made it this long he stands a chance given the proper environment. We are a little concerned on how to get him to eat. So far, we haven't had much success.

Is there another out there with an "eyeless Oscar"? Anyone have any suggestions for us on how to properly care for this baby?

I really don't think it will survive I hate to say? May be lucky, but to find food, it will be hard! You could try holding food infront of it's face?
But good luck, and if it doesn't survive, then it had a good home!

Its hard to fly like an eagle when you are surrounded by turkeys

its posible for it to survive alot of blind animals do. oscars are very brainy and learn easy. i would say start to tap on the water to create disturbance. he should go towards it to nsee well find out whats ging on then get the food near his mouth and being an oscar should take it from you. its going to be tough but youve gone this far with getting him im sure you can give him a good life of what he can have if it dont work .

good luck

You have taken on a lot of work by getting an oscar without eyes. You will need to hand feed until you have trained him to come to the top of the water to feed (tapping on the tank lightly before feeding will get him to associate it with food). Worms are a good food as you can dangle one end to touch him above his mouth without getting you hand too close to him and scaring him

However oscars are not like human and lots of animals that can live quite happily without eyesight. You have to ask yourself what sort of life will he lead.

Keeping him in a tank on his own would be best, however if you are gonna have tankmates avoid any fish that may be even slightly aggressive
I can't get no sleep
