TOPIC: Does Anyone Know What This Is?

Does Anyone Know What This Is? 1 year, 10 months ago #104069

On 7-12 they looked like this.

7-14 they looked like this.

By tomorrow they'll probably be gone. Here's an example from early June.

And the next day.

He's had these once in January, March, and April, at least twice in June, and this is the second time this month. The first day you can only see them up close at a certain angle (if you're at eye level or slightly beneath him). In 1-2 days you can see them from across the room. He'll flash but not much. Then, in a day or two, they're gone. My Firemouth and Silver Dollars are fine. This video was made in mid June. It shows how completely these things go away between episodes:

Basics: 90 gallon with 1 Oscar, 3 Silver Dollars, 1 Firemouth
2 Eheim 2215s
Approximately 70% water change every 5 days. Ammonia & nitrites are always 0. Nitrate is orange before water changes.
PH is 7.4 (was 7.8 two weeks ago) KH is 6, GH is 9, temp 79-80

He eats Omega One pellets, Massivores, freeze-dried krill, Omega One Veggie Rounds. About half his meals are soaked in Vita Chem.
In case one of the rocks was causing it, I removed everything from the tank except two plastic ornaments. This was before the last outbreak.
I've tried correlating the emergence of these ghostly spots with how long it's been since a water change but there's no obvious connection.

The only med I've tried is Seachem Paraguard. On another forum someone said his Oscar had the same thing and Melafix worked. It can't hurt. I'm wondering if this could be a reaction to PH swings. I'm going to keep a close eye on those readings.

Anybody ever seen anything like this?

I would assume it might be a type of fungal infection...are they light grey cottony patches?

Re: Does Anyone Know What This Is? 1 year, 10 months ago #104075

Not cottony, almost ghostly. And they don't stay long. If it were fungal I'd think it would get worse (or at least not improve).

Ah, I just noticed you said they 'disappear.'

This one has me stumped. Your water quality is good yet your fish seems to be getting some sort of infection that goes quickly. Its doesnt look like an injury, its almost like your fish is having an alergic reaction to something. Have you compared the outbreaks with the types of food you are feeding?

Has your fish been scratching itself on decor (this indicates irratation), or has your fish show any signs of having a parasite of any sort? (this requires very close inspection to see them)

That's exactly what I was thinking...

could it be somke kinda fluke, for it dissappears so quickly.
Just a guess though..
Our fish don't grow too big, our tank becomes too small!

strange. i think if you water change properly and don't have the tank too overstocked then you should have healthy O.

it takes quite a bit of effort. I hope the best for our Oscar

... its almost like your fish is having an alergic reaction to something.

I think this might be the key. It's a matter of narrowing it down. Maybe some cleaning product my wife is using? (But the Firemouth is completely immune to whatever it is. He has perfect skin.)

Have you compared the outbreaks with the types of food you are feeding?

He gets the same rotation every week: Omega One pellets one day, Massivores the next, then freeze-dried krill soaked in Vita Chem, plus he snags a few of the Silver Dollar's Veggie Rounds. He's almost a year old so I suppose I should start feeding every other day.

This one has me stumped.

You're in good company. A marine biologist on another site said the same thing. Only ONE person has said they've seen it (and recommended Melafix). I keep expecting five posters to write "Yeah, I've seen that. It's X." This is extremely weird.

Has your fish been scratching itself on decor (this indicates irratation), or has your fish show any signs of having a parasite of any sort?

He rubs his head a little when he has the spots. A week of Seachem Paraguard should have taken care of any parasites. I'm going to try the Melafix/Pimafix combo next.

I just wanted to say "awesome video"!!

It was nominated for an Oscar. You'll like this one. Note that it's a different tank. One of the rounded edges split in early May. So whatever's causing this isn't the tank or the substrate. (Also interesting: I had to cycle the new tank in a hurry so I used Dr. Tim's One & Only. It took about a week to see nitrates. Ammonia never went above 1 and I never saw nitrites. My Oscar was spotless during this somewhat traumatic period.) This is a tough, healthy, rowdy Oscar -- except for his mysterious skin condition.
