TOPIC: Major accident... Don't know what to do...

Major accident... Don't know what to do... 1 year, 8 months ago #110933

My oscar woke me up last night because she was making so much noise. I heard the gravel moving and lots of splashing. I should have gotten up to check on her but I didn't, because she wakes me up all the time.

When I went to feed her this morning, that's when I noticed something was terribly wrong. She is bleeding, and is missing a lot of scales. There are scales all over the bottom of the tank. Both her fins are torn, especially her left one. It has a huge hole and it is bleeding. She is having a lot of trouble swimming around.

Please help...

We need water test results... Readings for Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, and PH

Any tank mates?

What size tank is she in? Filtration?

She does look kinda rough, but I see HITH on top of what you mentioned....

She is in a 55 gallon all by herself. Nitrates are 30 ppm, Nitrites are 0 ppm, pH is 6.5, and ammonia is 0.
I know it might kind of look like HITH in the picture, but it really isn't. She didn't look anything like this yesterday. I'm going to take a video as soon as I can so it is more visible what we are dealing with. She almost looks shredded on her face and sides.

Sorry, I forgot to say I have a 75 gallon biowheel filter.

your waterparameters seem fine, so there must be something else the matter.
Could something have spooked him?
Any changes in diet, maintenance or decor?

Yeah, I recently put river rocks in her aquarium because it was just too boring only having gravel. I have always been very paranoid about putting any decorations in her tank because she is so aggressive, and I worry that she will hurt herself, which is why I picked the rocks that I did. She hated the new rocks, but I didn't worry because they are so smooth, and I didn't think she could hurt herself with them. I think the gravel is what hurt her, but I took the river rocks out anyway.
There are no other fish in the aquarium, so I have no idea what could have spooked her. She freaks out a lot in the middle of the night, but she has never gotten hurt this bad.
I really just need to know what to do at this point.

I'll take a video. She's really torn up.

I recently had a SD spook my tiger at night and he went up and down the tank like a bouncingball, hitting the lid, then the gravel and back again.
He lost a few scales , but it looked nothing like the shredding on your fish.
Just scales coming off clean and some cuts.
Are you sure this came to pass in one night?
It seems like the slimecoat of the scales is shedding.
But this would point to some kind of effect of your waterparameters.

Maybe i'm grasping at straws here, but can you retest your nitrites and ammonia for me?
No other additions made to the water?

Any damage at my fish healed within some days, with waterparameters kept best as possible...

Yes, this all happened last night. Ugh... I should have gotten up to check on her. The splashing went on for a good thirty seconds.
The parameters I provided were the results of a test I did as soon as Nikki told me to do them.
I really don't think this is a water quality issue. This was just the result of a rough night. Should add salt or stress coat to the water?

do you have any gap in-between two decors or rocks....sometimes
oscar tries to squeeze in in a space or gap to explore area beyond
reach... and hurt themselves in the process....you can look into that angle
