I was out of town for 2 months and needless to say, the roommate I put in charge of my fish did a terrible job. Water conditions were very bad when I returned and after doing around a 50% change. I have been treating the water with sea salt and doing 30% changes every 3 days. I cant tell if the lesion like markings by the gills and the white make on his head are getting better or just staying the same. I just got done testing my waters levels for PH, Nitrate ect (everything is ok) The tank is a 55G and his only companion for about a year is a jack dempsy thats about 4in. Im not exactly sure if this is HITH Its just my best guess and what I have been treating for. Its hard to see in the photo but there is a bit of redness (like a dot) in the lesion next to the gill. I don't see nearly any craters on the head though.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would say this is more than likely HITH. The best advice I can give you is to keep the water is as good a condition as you can. I have an Oscar who had something very very similar to this, the lesion was about the same size & was on the gill plate. After making sure that the water was always in good condition, it healed up. It may take a little bit of time so you may have to be patient. You could possibly treat the water or treat the food with an antibiotic just in case there is a slight infection.

Wow, straight from the top thanks. Good to know I have been I have been doing the right thing. About the antibiotic, do I just go to my local vet and say I have a fish with HITH and they give me a prescription? Never done this before. Also was thinking about moving him to a 100gal tank in the next day, would that be too much of a shock for him?

Thanks again.

Its difficult to say for sure but it does look like it could be HITH. If its an injury it will heal quickly with good water conditions(a few days). If its HITH then you it will take much longer. To help cure it the best way is to keep the best water you can and this means extra water changes. At least 3 a week but the more the better

Thanks again for all of the helpful information. Just to be on the caution side I also got a little bit of antibiotic. It looks like its clearing up slowly (i hope) Ill keep you posted. So i just did the frequent changes, sea salt, and a little bit of antibiotic as of Yesterday.
