TOPIC: HITH??

HITH?? 3 years, 5 months ago #18595

Please help me, this is the first time ever I have had to deal with hole in the head, I come home today to find my red oscars head looking moldy looking and cracked, I gather it is the onset of HITH. I done a 75% water change straight away and also dropped the temp of the water as it was a little high. Up around the 28-29celcius mark. so I dropped it back down to 26 straight away. I have another oscar in there also. Is it contagious?? I am having a heart attack here.

Can you please post a photograph? Hole in the head disease doesn't normally appear from nowhere, it is something that starts off quite small and gradually gets worse if not treated. Try not to do too much of a large water change, check your water first, if everything seems okay, you needn't go too mad. Carryout water changes according to your nitrate levels, try to keep them at 20 or below. This will certainly help when it comes to the healing process.

Hold in the head disease is not something that Oscars catch. It is actually caused by a parasite that often lives within the fish. Normally, the fish lives a perfectly healthy life even though these parasites live within. However, if the fish is exposed to poor water conditions, or is fed an unsuitable diet, these parasites can cause a problem and this is when the symptoms of hole in the head disease starts appearing. This is my understanding of the disease, it is actually a disease that is not quite understood fully yet. The easiest way of preventing it is to carry out regular water changes and feed the fish a healthy diet.

After reading how HITH is contracted/developed I am thinking maybe it isn't that. As I do weekly water changes and they are on a stable and healthy diet of mealworms, bloodworms and a frozen food which I make for them and the occassional cricket when I buy them, for a treat. Nitrite levels are always between 18-20. When I got up this morning his head was looking a lot better already compared to yesterday and now a couple of hours later it seems to be looking better again. I have taken some photo's but I apologise they are not the best as they were more interested in eating as to posing for the photo's LOL.
