i recently purchased 2 oscars from a pet store. When i got home and inspected them 1 of the oscars had some sort of film that covers approx half of the eye,on both eyes.I purchased a broad spectrum cure called fungus cure.It said it would cure eye cloud and cotton mouth because both oscars have bumps on their chin.Reading this website i found out that the bumps are nothing to worry about, but the eye cloud or whatever it is still persists.I followed the instructions on the medication, and i took out the carbon in my filter.Im at my wits end.The oscars are approx 3 inches long, and i have them in a 50 gallon tank.(hoping to get a bigger tank soon)Thanks in advance for any help...

Once you finish the medication, focus on keeping your water parameters as neat as possible (say nitrates at 10 or 15ppm).

By the way, as far as I know, API Fungus Cure is likely to disrupt your biological filtration, the water colouration is expected and shouldn't stain your tank in the long run but could ruin some decoration.

I guess you noticed this early. I haven't faced that problem yet but read here and elsewhere that if treated timely it should heal well.

Some fishkeepers use medication as a last resource. Personally, if my water parameters are in check -and I put a good work in keeping them there- I jump the gun early and treat with broad spectrum gramm positive and gramm negative at the same time, dosing twelve hours appart if I found to have solid basis to suspect bacterial infection. For that to be cost effective I use a Hospital tank. It gives me the benefit of keeping their home tank stable cycle wise and reduces my load of work even if I need to perform frequent partial water changes since it is a much smaller tank.

I am glad you are getting a bigger tank, in the meantime, improve your filtration system if needed. You could complement the regime by feeding them Spyrulina based food -allegedly enhance their immune system.

Please wait for others' feedback.

most eye problems result from bad water conditions. fungus and ammonia being most likely. The fact you got them this way may mean it will heal now you have them in a new environment. as pepe says check your water conditions and keep it in tip top condition. treatment would help if its a fungus. i would have used "melafix" but your treatment may do the job. Mixing treatments isn't good so you may as well stay with what you have. It will take a few days to look better and a few weeks to clear in total. there is also a very small chance it may not get better. if the damage is a result of another problem, say prolonged ammonia contact or bulling or general bad health. you say there are bumps too?? around the eye?? how long ago did you notice it??.

I notice the bumps on both oscars the day after i got them.(2 weeks ago)They look like little hard white single bumps and they are located on the chin. The oscar with the film on its eye has triple the size bump on its chin.

I read on this site that the bumps could be a sign of maturity and not to worry about it?Im pretty sure its not cotton mouth because the bumps are not fuzzy in appearance. The bumps have not gotten any bigger or smaller since i got the pair.

Thanks for the great advice guys and i will be buying myself a water testing kit asap.

Anymore advice that you can think of would be greatly appreciated.

my pangasius used to have blurred eyes after banging their
head to the glass. eventually, it will clear up in 2 to 3 days.
however, oscars do not do the banging, so probably it is due
to some infection or water condition as marcus is saying.

water parameters will help us to assess the situation.
welcome on site.

Ok, the bumps on the chin are very common and are usually a fish type of calous from rubbing glass or stone, As the fish get older they tend to clean rocks and the bumps come at the same time so are related. Nothing to worry about there. keep a watch on the eyes though as this is a problem. i too think and hope it will clear, if your waters kept in good condition. keep us posted and get straight back if it gets worst.

for variety you should try crickets earthworms beefhearts prawn krill or shrimp. these are relatively inexpensive and have all the neccessary vitamins your oscars will need for good health and colour.

btw happy to hear your oscars eye has cleared up.
