Hi,

I don t know what is wrong with my oscar. Its laying on its side at the botom. I red in the health section of this site that it could be because of my water change, but it doesn t give any specefic detail of the time it takes for the fish to react this way or for how long.

I changed 30% of the water on tuesday, but its only today (thursday) that I noticed. When I changed the water there is one bucket that was noticebly warmer but I didn t think it would make a diference, since it was warmer and not colder, could it be that? Other wise I have no idea why its doing that. tanks for your help in advance!

welcome to the site Angy.

first, when you did water change, did you clean
the filtering system?

how long have you set up your tank?
what size of tank?
how many fish/es? size/s?
ammonia?
nitrite?
nitrate?
pH?

we need this data to determine what was wrong with your o

hi thanks for replying so fast.

i have had this tank for more than two years and befor that i had a smaller one
with the same fish;

I only change 30% of my water, (I only changed the filter s sponge last month),
i make a 30% water change every month.

its a 75 gallon tank with two oscars, 12" and 14", and I just added a pleco, its
small so I had to use a divider;

For the ammonia and stuff I have no idea, I will go tomorow to the store to have
it checked out;

thanks again in advance!

okey then. while waiting for the water parameters,
do keep water change weekly for safety precaution.
your oscar have outgrown your tank. one fully grown
oscar needs at least 75 gallon tank capacity with
enough filtration. having two for that size is over
stocked already. a new pleco is an additional load,
plus a divider that might impair the smooth flow of
your water cycle may result in water problem.

oscar do sleep and rest their belly touching the
bottom but not their side. when awake, they still
swim and compete in grabbing foods.

is he/she still eating? if so, then there is a big
chance of survival.

ok so my water isn t so good.
I have nitrit starting to go up and some phosfate,
some thing like that. The guy at the store gave me some cycle stuff to put in,
and told me I should make a 25% water change every week, (so more often but less
than I usualy do)He also told me that having my three fishs isn t so bad if I do
my water change every week. Does that make sense to you?

Thanks again!

in a solid healthy aquarium you should be changing at least 25-30% of your water on a weekly basis. when dealing with large cichlids this is a must. these fish are not like tropical fish which produce little waste. they are big and messy. that is why water chaanges are so important.

your ultimate goal is to keep your nitrates down below forty on the day of your water change. by testing before you do a wqter change you can determine how much water you will have to replace and the frequency(this depends on your stocking level). reguardless of what other may tell you this is the only surefire way to know if you are doing enough maintanace or not.
Warning..I will offend you at some point!!!

my goal is simple a complete understanding of the universe, why it is as it is and why it exists at all

a picture is needed to check if popping eyes is a problem
or just the natural features of oscar's eyes.

it is normal to any lfs to tell the hobbyist what are
to be added in your tank,,,, but often than not, they
just want to make sales of their merchandise. regular
water change is the surest way to keep your water in good
condition (unless your are practicing heavy hydroponics)
as i have said, 75 gal is already too small for 2 fully
grown oscar, you can only keep your water at par with
frequent water change as advised.

hi its me again!
I think my oscar may have some fungus? It kind of have a
whitish "duvet" almost all over and it rubbes against the rocks as if it iched?
And this morning it had a brown spot on its head about half an inch wide.

Have any idea of what it could be and what I should do?

a picture will help us help you diagnose the
problem. but base on your description, you may
have fungi infection or HITH. you may take a look
