It looks very much like ick (white spot) to me. 1st what size is the fish so I can gauge the size of the spots.can you give us more info on what the spots look like, raised, cotton wool, indents etc ?

Can you please post your water reading for
ammonia
nitrites
nitrates
ph.
what ever it is most of fish sickness is due to water problems so this info is vital to us. treatment for ick would be to turn your temp up to 30c but until you post your reading I would wait because you said the fish was gasping at the surface. this suggests you have water condition problems. in the mean time try to create ripples on the surface to help oxygen enter the water.

so i did a 50 percent water change and treated for fungus the fish is about 10 to 12 inches and the spots are not raised not going to do a reading until after the second treatment so i can get an accurate reading but i know for sure it is not ICK i have had ick in the tank before and have seen what it looks like up and personal so i know that for sure

not all ick look alike specially when they are
at early stage. the picture look like ick to me.

i agree with marcus.... most illness of fish are water
related. pristine water is the first defense against fish
sickness.

i suggest you add a liitle dose of salt to enhance oxygenation.
this is in addition to what marcus had suggested about ripples
or surface agitation.

I would also consider pox, and a little less likely lymphocystic. pox is likely if your temp has been unstable or you have moved the fish from different tanks.
I am not sure I spelt lymphocystic correct? but this mainly affects salt water fish but can also affect fresh water. good luck with the treatment. what are you using?

i respect your opinion that you beleive it is not ick/whitespot.. but i have to concur with marcus and paul ......in my honnest opinion i would treat for ick/whitespot ......the pic is just to help compare
the pick below is a classic case of ick /whitespot

that's not ick mates... definitely NOT ick. the spots would be much smaller, and would be obviously raised.

i am not sure what your fish has, perhaps a larger and better pic would help?

let me say this:

first, look closesly at them. are they indented? then, do you see even more black indents in the indents? if so, your probably dealing with the early stages of Hole in the Head disease (HITH AKA HLLE). If that's the case, the best solutions is water changes, water changes, and more water changes. Also, try a more varied diet.

if they appear like cotton fluffs, or snow (or even like a much larger form of ick) i would do this-
do a water change
treat with medication. i would recommend any sort of Jungle Fungal protection product, this will clear up a large variety of ailments that your fish could have.

hope this helps,
art

they are indent but where the indents are on the fins are now holes through them and what kind of salt and how much should i add

Wow. I think your problem is water quality. What you need to do is Water Changes! Change lots or water, and hope for the best. If your really worried you could add melafix and pimafix together. This speeds up healing and kills any fungus (if that's the case).
