TOPIC: please help

please help 3 years, 3 months ago #21934

I currently have 2 oscars, both about 2 and half inches that have been doing very well, a couple days ago they both stopped eating, they really show no response to anything and just hide under a tank ornament all day, they are losing there color and do not look good at all, I do regular water changes and I tested the water and everything seems to be fine, the temperature is a little low at about 72F, if anyone can give me any advice I'd appreciate it,

Thanks,
Andrew

I'm no expert, as i am a newb here as well... But having read around the other posts, i would say that you need to post exact water readings... Ammonia, NitrIte and NitrAte for sure, and i'd get that temp up to around 76 or so. Honestly, "everything seems to be fine" doesnt tell us much...

I wish the best to you and your oscars, and hope that one of the guys knows whats going on. (sounds like good old fashioned stress to me)

hi Andrew,
first thing first: we need the following info:
1) how big is your tank?
2) capacity of filtering pump?
3) how long the tank had been running?
4) any tank mate/s?
5) post water readings: ammonia ? nitrate? nitrite?
6) kinds of feeds?
we can only help you if we knew those data.

if i still remember it right, you have a 65 gal tank.
i am afraid you did clean again your filtering system
killing all the good bacteria colonies.

As Paul has asked can you provide some more info. I would add that your temp is low and will affect how your fish eat and behave. I would turn up temp to 80f if your heater is at full I would buy a larger heater or a second heater to reach a more suitable temp for the fish.

I appreciate the help, and i do have a 65 gallon, its just the 2 small oscars in the tank, i have a marineland emperor 400 hanging filter, my water test isn't the best, just a stip you dip in the water but the nitrates and nitrites look to be 0, i did have to transport the fish when i moved back to school but they were doing perfectly fine for the first 2 weeks, they primarily eat hikari chichlid pellets and occasionaly crickets or freeze dried shrimp, and im afraid the heater may be too weak, what wattage do you suggest for a 65 gal? and i did a 50% water change when they first started acting weird and did not clean the filter,

Again thank you so much for the info,
Andrew

We also need to know the ammonia reading. I would advise you to get liquid tests. You say that nitrate is zero, how long has your tank being set up for? It's virtually impossible to keep nitrate at zero.
