Darrin created the topic: Sick 12 year old Oscar- eye issue

Our 12 year old Oscar has a large green ball/sphere in one of his eyes. I am thinking that he is becoming (or is) blind in that eye. He has not been swimming around. He is just resting on the bottom of the tank. My daughters love this fish. What can I do to help him? I have done water changes. Looking for help. Thanks, Darrin

Don't know if I can post a photo? Will try to put it as my bio picture.

the easiest way to post photos is to put them on photobucket then just copy and paste the img code

Welcome to the community. That is a very good age for an Oscar. The older creatures get, the more susceptible they are to illnesses and ailments. I've got a couple of fish healthcare books that I will look through and see if I can find anything that resembles what your fish has.

Sometimes when fish start having eye problems they will become less active, basically they can't see where they're going. Are there any other signs of illness on the fish? We would definitely like to see a photograph, that would be most helpful.

Also, we normally ask for water conditions as well. The fact that you have managed to keep this Oscar for 12 years only goes to show that you have obviously looked after properly. If you could test the water, that would be appreciated.

Adding photos to your post is very easy. First thing to do is create a photo bucket account, if of course you haven't done this already. Then upload the photos you want. Once the photo is uploaded, you simply click on the photos, then to the right of the page you will see some various pieces of code, one of which will be IMG code. Click on the code and it will be automatically copies, then just paste it into your thread and then we will be able to see the photo.

Here is the photo of our Tiger Oscar's eye. There is a greenish 'ball' that is on the inside of his eye.

Thanks for all the posting photo advice!

Your Oscar indeed has an eye problem. I must ask though.. do you not think the erosion and holes in his flesh are also an issue? Your Oscar has a bad case of hole in the head (hith) and the eye problem is directly related. Almost always caused by prolonged exposure to poor water quality. Do you regularly measure levels of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate? How often and at what volume do you do water changes? Also size of tank and brand and size of filtration please.

i agree with Suprd71, there is something wrong with those erosion at the nostril... either bad water exposure or vitamin deficiency as the fish get older... i believe your fish is losing the eyesight... like my fish, one eye became black while the other side became yellow... i had to feed her or drop the food in her face every feeding for 2 years...
