RLW15 created the topic: Oscar may have a snail stuck - in Distress

I went to the fish store to get a pleco for algea control and they sold me 20 snails and said it would be fine. My five year old tiger immediately ate 3 then seemed to spit them out but may have grabbed another.

He is changing color, sucking in and spitting out rocks, stretching his mouth spinning, darting swimming backward and is just not OK.

Any suggestions?

there's not much you can do but wait if the snail has past its pharyngeal teeth in the throat

If you have problems with snails, I read that you can leave a piece of squash for the night. The next day, pick the squash up with loads of snails. Just wondering do u have any other pets beside an oscar?

grab a cam and took some footages...

your description shows your fish is building a nest....
if the snail is still young and small, oscar will pass it out...

i'm unsure why your LFS will sell you snails in an oscar tank ~ it's an expensive snack for him. yes a video will be helpful to determine if the snails stuck or just playing in the sand. how is he today? how big are the snails?

EDIT we don't lack a sense of humour on OFL but there is a time and a place for jokes

The snails (20 of them) are cherry size and Oscar (that's his name too) is better today but after feeding him a few crickets (favorite treat) he acted up again - less serious. Possibly injured himself internally and reacting to that and mad about the pleco (also added a dwarf green terror, 3 inches). He seems to be ignoring the new fish but I did work on the tank 200+ gal yesterday and moved some things around. IDK - Oscars!!

Glad to hear that your Oscar seems to be on the mend. The rule of thumb is don't put anything in the tank that your Oscar can fit in its mouth easily, that the easiest way to avoid problems.

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)

Thank you,

I will pull the snails out; I thought it a bad Idea but was told it would not be a problem. I raised an oscar many years ago with a much different personality so I'm still learning this guy's responses even though I got him as a baby.

I really appreciate everyone "showing up" for me!
