nicoleb created the topic: Oscar 10yrs old, not eating, heavy breathing

I have a 10yr old Oscar who loves his food. for the last 4-5 days he hasn't been eating, i got him some blood worms, not interested, now hes having trouble breathing, but he looks ok, i dont think his tummy is swollen.

I have a 7 foot tank and only 1 other fish (a large Clown Loach) in the tank - the water temp is on 27/28 degree Celsius. I don't have a water testing kit, but will get one tomorrow.

I haven't done any water changes in the last 2-3 weeks and nothing new has been added to the tank, no change in diet, everything the same as it has been for the last 10 yrs.

Please help, i hate seeing him this way.

that could be your problem how often and how much water do you normally change?

Usually that time frame, so that's not out of the ordinary either. When I do, I take no more than 1/4 - 1/3 out.

can you think of anything else. could it be old age and he's on his way out?

its normal recommended to change water at least once a week and do about 50% (or more) each time however with how old the fish is just starting to do that now could shock him

the only thing i can think of is maybe he is starting to become sensitive to the water quality so maybe try to do 10 or 20% water change every couple days and see if it helps

could it be old age and he's on his way out?

yes it's possible 10 years is a decent age for a oscar

and could you post a picture maybe someone can see something wrong with him that you're overlooking you can post pictures by putting them on photobucket (its free) then just click on the IMG code and past in the chat box

Do a 25% water change everyday for the next 5 days and see if his disposition improves. Overtime, the water quality that it could handle in the past, would be less than ideal as it gets older.

How often does he normally eat?

What do you normally feed him?

Also, I notice something. I might be worng bout this one, but is it normal for an oscar's eye to be popping out like that?

yeah... i do noticed the pop-eye ... either high in nitrogen or bacterial infection...
sometime, an epsom salt helps remove liquid in the eyes...

are both eyes popping out?

Yes, they have been for as long as I remember - both

Here are a few pics in daylight. I noticed a little red mark on his face just in from his gills, is this anything I should be worried about?

He usually eats every day - I just feed him protein pallets - about 15 per day.
