Please help, I've tried everything with my fish who first started showing signs of illness some 4-5 weeks ago and I posted This Topic about it. I've since been doing 40-50% water changes every 2 day but today hes looking worse than ever. He has something wrong with his fin and is lopp sided in the tank. Is there any hope for him or should i put him out of his misery? Hes 10 :(

Oh dear, you are right, he doesn't look very good at all. Is that clown Loach I can see?

Have you actually tested the water for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH. If so, can you please post the water parameters ASAP. What I'm trying to do is find out whether it's water conditions that are causing the problem, or whether the fish is ill. Have you got any other fish? If so, how are they? Are they behaving normally?

I suspect your Oscar is not eating at all, he doesn't look like he would be interested in food. Is it breathing heavily, gasping, opening its mouth constantly?

Get back to us with some answers and we will try and help, but I think you should prepare yourself for the worst, that fish looks very ill indeed

thank you for your reply.

I dont think he has eaten in 4 weeks - not that i have seen. I've tried blood worms, peas etc.
It was a water condition - nitrate was 200 and i've done all I can to reduce it but I think it has been too late. I keep going back to the aquarium shop and they just tell me all i can do is the water changes but hes only slowly got worse.

My water otherwise tested ok for all readings.

I have just the one other fish in the tank which is my clown loach and yes, hes been gasping since he first got sick.

I dont want him to be suffering.

Can you confirm that the clown loach is okay? Clown loach are very sensitive to poor water so if the water was bad enough to affect the Oscar, I would probably expect the clown loach to be showing signs of stress as well.

To be honest, I think euthanising the Oscar ASAP would be the kindest thing to do, really do not see any hope for it. It's just sitting there waiting to die. It's not quite understood how much pain fish do feel, but if it is feeling pain then it must be absolutely awful.
