hannahbaa created the topic: Do my oscars have fin rot?

Hi everyone!

I'm new to posting on here, but i have read a bunch of the forums on here previously.

I'm pretty sure my 2 Oscars have fin rot but i'm not positive, we are currently treating them for ich which we noticed on them about 4 days ago which has now detached itself. (When checking today I couldn't see anymore white spots on them).

Now their fins and tails are turning white on the ends and fraying, and they are pouting a lot which they don't usually do.

I have pictures to attach but I am not sure how to yet, if someone could tell me i would appreciate it. :)

Those will heal as long as you keep nitrates below 20ppm, and ammonia and nitrites are at 0ppm. There's no need to add anything else.

If you don't have a liquid test kit, get the API Freshwater Master Test kit.

I also don't see any cause for concern. Fin rot is often caused by a bacterial infection which can be brought on by poor water conditions. However, fin rot is normally quite noticeable as it can affect the roots of the fins. If you're Oscars are acting strange and you don't know why then it's obviously a good idea to check the water conditions, especially ammonia and nitrite. If the fish is being exposed to high toxins then it's going to make it feel very unwell and it will not want to move around much

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)

how long or when did you got them? for me, those white edges are just new membrane
which means the fish is growing..

Looks like new growth to me, not fin rot. I don't see any fraying.

So I checked the water and that all checks out good, neither of my Oscars are eating still but my black tiger Oscar is still pouting but his fins look better than before, but my albino tiger Oscar isn't pouting anymore, been swimming around like normal but his fins (especially it's tail fin) has been getting worse. I don't know what the problem is, so i'm still thinking it might have a disease. What do you guys think this is and do you think I need to start adding medication like melafix?

now , the picture show the tail fin si fraying... you need to do something with it.
get a bucket, add some new water, put some rock salt = 1table spoon /5gal water;
add met blue.. and soak the fish in there... (immersion method -10 minutes), then
return the fish to the tank.. you can keep the same solution for the next immersion
after 8 to 10 hours.
