Hi,

I think my 7 year Oscar is dying. He is lying on his side, not moving and has been like this for 2 days. He also hasn't eaten for 2 days or so.

My tank is 60" x 24" x 19" high (to waterline) 118 us gallon.

He lives with 5 silver dollars
1 X Parrot fish
1 X Synodintis Nigrita.

The water parameters are so:
Temp 24 degrees c
Ammonia 0.25 ppm
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 20 ppm
ph 7.4

The ammonia was 0.50 but I have gradually reduced. i think I have been overfeeding POSSIBLY?( about 15 Hikari Gold daily) This was because I had a 3 " pearl eartheater that was missing out on food. This has since died unfortunately.

I have 2 external fllters. 1 x Eheim 2317 with heater, and 1 X Eheim 2217.
The Nitrate has always been around 20ppm since our tap water has a fair amount of nitrate already in it. I do 40% water change per week

I fear its to late for Roger bit I would really grateful for any advice as I love this fish! Incidentally, the other fish are fine.

Many thanks
Nigel

Seven years is quite old for an Oscar. Are there any external signs of illness on your Oscar? How about the breathing, is opening and closing its mouth a lot? Can you take a photo or video? I'll be honest with you I've been in-this position on several occasions and it's not very often the Oscar has made a full recovery. I think you should prepare yourself for the worst.

You never know, the Oscar may suddenly start behaving normally, but it doesn't sound good.

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. Roger isn't gasping for air, his gils are moving normally but he isn't opening his mouth at all. I expected him to be possibly dead this morning but he is now sitting on the bottom of the tank rather than laying flat. I will do another 25% water change today and post water parameters.

I will keep fingers crossed but I fear you are right Penn :(

Thanks again
