I had mine affected by HITH. I've neglected its care for the past year and I'm now taking it back to heal. What are the supposed method to cure it. I'm doing frequent water changes of about 20-30% , some meds for fungus and bacterial infection.
- A near 3yr old Oscar, accompanied by an all time bud' Pleco.
- 3ft tanks with over the top filter (with bio rings, lava rocks & some "maifan" stones.
- added 6 small tiger barbs

Signs of the symptoms Ive seen:
- O's doesnt eat much
- Get scared by the little tiger barbs when close to him
- Floats at one point and not moving much. Hides away when I try to move some things.

our normal questions are: level of ammonia=? ; Nitrite =? Nitrate=?; pH=? and temp=?
do you better picture?
older oscar normally eats once a day only but in bulk for 3 minutes..
i never encounter such attitude with my community...
and i have not use any med for them..

All about good water. Trying to keep nitrates under control in a tank that size is a full time gig. I'd be doing 3x 50% changes a week. My current tank with one Oscar is a 4ft 55g and I do 2x 50% a week and still struggle with nitrates, am going to start the 3x regime soon, hence my O is getting a new 90g

Welcome to OFL. As stated, clean water is the key. Tank space is also very important. Your tank is far too small for an Oscar. Even changing enough water to keep clean, there is another issue, that being Oscar does not respond well to cramped quarters. Stress from lack of space will lead to weakened immune system, and constant ongoing problems. Look for a tank of at least 75-90gals, plenty of filtration. Fish will do much better, and you yourself will enjoy the hobby more.
