BlueNawaz created the topic: Help with Rehomed Oscar

Hi, so i need help with this Oscar which has been rehomed. This is an 8 inch oscar which has not eaten for 3 months. The previous owner of the fish had kept it in a 40 gallon tank with poor water conditions. We got it in this condition. It does not take any food. Tries to swim but fails and just drops back to the surface. Breathing is normal. I am not sure if we are dealing with Hole in the Head or Columnaris here . It is currently in a 150 gallon aquarium all by himself, we want to treat it completely and hopefully get it back to accepting food again. How do i proceed with the treatment and what medicine do you recommend?

Yes, as mentioned the Oscar was rehomed. It was an adult fish which had grown up in poor wter conditions in a 40 gallon tank. It was around 8-9 inches. We tried our best to save it and get it to eat, but to no avail. It was having many health conditions including severe hith. It survived for around 4 months with us with minimal to no food but eventually passed away.

As of now there is no Oscar as we are maintaining two other tanks, a 150 gallon african cichlid tank, a stand alone 60 gallon Black diamond tank. But we will go for Oscars again as it is our favorite fish. But taking 5-6 months break from it.

Ok. I had two so far a few years ago and gave both due to size. At the time my tank was quite smaller. Meanwhile I've had several smaller cichlids but none like oscars so I've just selled today all my current fish and after tomorrow I'll be looking for oscars with the kind of markings I've had before.

Happy new year!

African Cichlids are beautiful and fun to watch but they will never replace Oscar in my opinion, as Oscars have a more vibrant personality. Also African Cichlids are far more aggressive and hig maintenance as you have to keep them in a large number to contain aggression. So yeah eventually will keep Oscars again.

Happy New year !!

Not only african cichlids are nothing compared to oscars my friend. I have keeped several cichlids mainly from south america and untill now thisvis the only fish I'm sure that I'll be fully satisfied with for many long years.

This is more than a fish. This is pet almost as interactive as a cat or a dog.

HAPPY 2017.
