JGSPINS created the topic: OSCAR VERY SICK - PLEASE HELP

My Oscar has been floating on his side for several weeks. His belly is very expanded. He cannot swim under the surface if he tries. I need to know what I can do to save his life. I have tried feeding him peas, he just spits them out. He's a tough fish, I don't want him to die. Does anyone know what I can do?

Several weeks of struggling is not good at all. It certainly sounds like swim bladder related, with a possible tumor pushing on the bladder, in which case euthanizing the fish is the humane way to go. If by chance its bad bloating or an intestinal block of sorts an epsom salt bath may help. Slim odds, but at this point nothing to lose. In a small tub or bucket dissolve 3 tsp of pure epsom salt per 5g of water. Same temp as the tank. Put the fish in for 5-10 mins or until he appears to be struggling with it. Should clear the block, if thats the problem. I dont think thats the thing, but cant hurt at this juncture.

Is there anything I can do, like poke a pin hole in his belly to help him with the bloat?

i would go with the Epsom salt bath as suggested by Suprd71.

My Oscar is having the same issue I fizzed him a few times but he bloats up again. I've tried everything but the Epsom salt. My only concern is that my Oscar shares the tank with a gar fish will the Epsom salt harm the gar??? Please advise I also considered euthanizing him I just don't seem him getting better. If I do grow the courage to euthanize him with clove oil how much ugh should I use he is 13" long.

13" long? if he is that big, you should give him a chance to recover...
gar is also an sturdy fish... he can withstand the epsom salt...

if you are decided in euthanizing the fish, just put him in a bucket,
dose few drops of clove oil, and it will sleep, then add another few drops,
he will not wake up anymore...
