As most of you already know, i recently rescued a small lutino oscar, anyway.....
he was doing fine, eating, getting on with my other oscars and just being a happy fish,
I went to work this morning, got home from work and noticed he was in a bad way, i had a closer look and noticed he been attacked big time, he has had all his fins chewed to bits and he's struggling to swim, his side looks like its been attacked as well.
i sat and watched it for 20 odd mins and noticed it was my small jack dempsey that had done this, he kept swimming straight at the baby oscar and nipping him.
so i rushed about and set up another small tank and put the baby oscar in.
question is.... can he/she survive this?
is there something i should buy to help the fins grow back.
i dont want to put the little guy to sleep.
its really upset me and im so mad with the JD.

Unfortunately this can be a problem when mixing semi-aggressive fish.

How severe are the injuries? I've not really had a great need to use meditation but I would imagine something like Melafix would be a good product to use on injuries. As always, good water conditions always aid healing. If the fish isn't injured too badly, I don't see why it wouldn't survive. However, one of the biggest killers of animals is stress, so even though it might not look badly injured, it might be severely stressed which might do more damage than bad injuries.

its still swimming about but seems to be really slow and dull.
every fin on his body, the side ones, the anal fin and every other fin that moves while it swims as been ripped apart.
will the fins grow back then?
im going to do 50% water change every day and feed him 3 times a day sparingly.
i just want the little guy to recover and grow his fins back.

i have 5 oscars and a green terror and the terror immediately started picking on my strawberry oscar named Pinky. Pinky was a good bit smaller than the terror and got beat up pretty badly. I agree that Melafix is the way to go when it comes to injuries like you are speaking of. Just make sure to take out your carbon if you use carbon. i also use a water conditioner made by Kordon (nova Aqua +) it has echinachea (spelling!) and vitamins, along with a slime coat enhancer, and a stress reducer that will help your little fishy get through this. now my pinky is stronger than ever and pinky has made sure that the terror runs from her now.

Melafix is the way to go Glen, my male Sev had ripped fins from the Oscars and he's already healing after only 3 days in the breeding tank. It'll take a while but he'll heal Like OFL said, watch for stress and use something with a stress coating in it. Have you got a pic of him?
