He did this about an hour ago. I turned out the lights and he has calmed down.Any info would be appreciated

OUCH! Nasty gash. Okay, as long as your water is in very good condition, ammonia and nitrite Zero, low nitrates, then this should heal up reasonably quickly without the need for any medication.

Thanks. Im faily new with fish care but really trying so please give a small break! Also new with computer(42yrsold) and and design clothes.... am trying to learn how to communicate properly on this thing!Lights out a good idea? Water is in good condition...a friend that has fish came to look.

have you got glass runners at the top of your tank? mine gashed himself trying to get a food pellet of the condensation tray check for un seen food he might be trying to get something

It is very common for Oscars to injure themselves. However, he wouldn't have hurt himself on purpose.
