TOPIC: sulking for too long.

sulking for too long. 2 years, 10 months ago #45020

just so you know.. my water conditions are perfect. regular weekly cleans, and tempreature ideal for oscar 26/28deg celcius. tank size 270lt.

3 weeks ago i got two oscars, one tiger and one red. put them in they were fine, highly active and eating great. they would come to the front of the tank and swim around and show off when they'd see me. a few days pasted i put a few rocks as decore in, they didn't seem to mind. then i saw the tiger had what seemed to be a broken bottom lip, so i gave him away in trade for an albino/red oscar. by now the original red one is almost 3cm bigger then the albino. as soon as i put her in, my red one would not accept her and he kept on biting her under her mouth when ever he'd see her. he wouldn't let her eat. by morning the albino was no where. she was hidden well behind a rock. and when i fed them he just wouldn't let her up to feed. he'd abuse her so i decided to give her back. now he is by himself. and for 2 weeks he has been "sulking", as in sitting in the corner of the tank on his side. he wont move especially when i come up to the tank. i feed him but he wont move only if i leave the light off and walk away, ill spy and see him eating. but he just wont swim around as he did before. he isn't active at all. so i decided to take him out of the tank remove some rocks and re-intoduce him, but he seems to be the same. he is so inactive and just wont act like an oscar fish. he isn't even interested in feeder fish i put in there, only if i walk away out of site. he has been like this now for almost 2 weeks. its almost as if he is dead scared of me.

what is he's problem???? someone give me some advice please....
is he lonely?

If only we could get into the mind of an Oscar Fish, it would make our lives a lot easier. Now I know you said your water is perfect, could you post the actual results for us please?

okay, I'm not going to suggest getting another Oscar because your tank isn't big enough. The only thing you can do is give the Oscar time. Don't put the light on for too long. Don't avoid going near the tank because he will never get used to you.

But like I say, please post the exact water results

thanks for the prompt reply. ill get those results tomorrow morning.

i didn't understand properly, did you mean leave the light on for a while or off?
and aslo could you just give me a quick list of all the tests i should be doing for oscars, just so i know exactly what i should be testing.. thanks. these pet shop people are no help at all. they said just ph levels to be neutral.
thanks

you should test for ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, and ph. if you bring your water to the lfs for testing you dont really know if your water is good or not.
you should purchase yourself a master test kit that tests for the above and do your own testing

Aquarium lighting is really only for our own benefit so we can see our fish. Most of the Amazonian fish live their lives in dimly lit and murky water.Fish often become spooked in very bright conditions. So taking your situation into account, it's probably best not to leave your tank lights on for too long. Your fish may feel a little happier if the tank is relatively dark. You can always introduce the lights gradually when you see a difference in his behaviour.

based on your post, i am not sure if your tank had been cycled before
putting your oscar in. your oscar's behavior is normal if the tank is
not fully cycled....
how long have your tank been set up? 270 or 70 US gal can accomodate
two small oscar but requires good filtration, otherwise, you will have
plenty of problem sooner.

i just have a question if someone could enlighten my view. Would an albino red and a dark tiger oscar get along?.. in the same tank?

that is a question that do not have sure answer. there are times
two oscar could not get along well regardless of color, but there
are time they did. it is a trial and error.

The colour would not make a difference as to weather they get along, its down to sex, and temperament along with tank size and available room for them to have space.
