Hello, all! You have helped me in the past , so I am calling on you now to tell me what to do. Here's what happened:

Gave my fish a dozen feeders to eat. Last time I did this, everything was fine, so I did not medicate the tank before I put them in.
Left town for two days.
Came home, fish was a furry, moldy mess. The fur is even on his eyes!!!
Freaked out seriously.
Began Melafix right away. one week later, not much change.
Drastic water change. like, 50% or more. during the waterchange, one of the eyes lost its furry covering. But now it looks like his whole EYE is GONE!!!!! IT LOOKS AWFUL!!!
More Melafix. and stress coat. (?)

I am really in a bad place right now. I feel like his suffering is my fault (because it is...), but I NEED to make him better. Is he blind??? Should I give him some salt or something?
What should I do???
I dont want to euthanise him- I really dont. But is he really suffering with that eye thing??? What do you think would be best??? I dont want him to die, but I dont want him to suffer at my hands, either...
I cant get a good pic of him, but he is a lucid oscar, about 1.5 pounds, and he has fur on various parts of his body (the eye is freaking me out), and some fin rot going on the tail.

can you post some test results for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate?
the "fur" is most likely a fungus, possibly from the feeders, possibly from poor water quality. i'm not as experienced as some of the others in treating illness, but i would do daily water changes and treat with meds for fungal infection.
as long as he keeps accepting food, all is not lost

oh yeah, store bought feeders are not very healthy for your fish... you don't know where they have been, or what they might be carrying. stick with a high quality pellett and treats like shrimp and bloodworms

Umm, actually , he is NOT accepting food. I figured that this was because of the melafix, though.

oooohh. it could be a side affect of the meds... i know O's can go a long time w/o food........

yeah, readings are no good. i would do another water change immediately. at least 50%

okay. I am on that water change right now. Should I add some salt??? I am by the computer in case I get any more responses. I know some of these guys are in the UK and there is a signifigant time difference, you know....

I wouldn't worry about the salt. Your best defense is going to be PERFECT water. You will need to test again in the morning and possibly do another water change.

Your water need to be as fallows. Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate no more than 40.

How long has your tank been up and running?
Have you recently cleaned the filter?
What kind of Filter is on your tank, and how big is your tank?

I got the oscar dec 08 when a friend got divorced, and the hubby wouldnt come get the fish. they were in foreclosure and she was just going to leave it w no electricity or anything. He was in a 30 gal tank when i got him, still have that, but I change the water twice weekly per necromancer's advice on the tank being too small. I am on freecycle for a larger one- cant invest in a larger one yet. Yes, I did recently clean the filter- the same day I gave him the yuckity feeder fish, as a matter of fact. And as always, I cleaned everything- the filters, the bucket, all that. I am double filtering now, btw, with the tetra filter whisper kind. does this info help?

One more thing: What about his eyes??? Will he be blind or something? Or will they heal? Will his tail come back??? I am most worried about the eyes- they look ghastly. and super gross. and hurty (painful). very hurty.

I would bet you cleaned too much and are now in a mini cycle. Your right his tank is too small, but if you can keep your water in control that will help...

You are going to have to check your water every day Hun. And you may have to do more than two water changes a week... Are you using test strips or the liquid kit?

Like I said just keep checking your water and get the readings where I said they needed to be and that will help him a lot...

Do you have an air bar in the tank? If not get one. The meds take the oxygen out of the water, so he will need air! Also, if you have any Carbon in the filters you need to remove it, the carbon filters out the meds so ultimately the meds wouldn't be helping.

It sounds like you are treating for several illnesses, Please keep us posted. I hope he gets better soon!

As for the eyes I don't know, His tail will grow back if the water is kept in great condition and not too much damage has been done.

A pic would be a BIG help.
