Hi folks!! My big friend unfortunately has HITH.. pictures from here and from other site looks very much alike from what my O has. i have tried frequent water changes, eliminated all carbon, checked for stray electricity and others. im left with one other choice which is the use of metronidazole.i have read that i can apply 250mg/10gal of water then the following dose after 24-48hrs after a 25% water change. my question: is the following dose same in amount as the initial dose or is it computed for the 25% water change ....eg

100galon x (250mg/10gal)=2.5g metronidazole

or

(100galon x 25%) x (250mg/10gal) = 0.625g metronidazole

I think you use the same amount as the initial after the water change. I use Octozin as my Oscar is recovering from HITH too. I had to use the exact same over three days but it was a biodegradable substance so doesnt need a water change. I think they would of said only complement for the 25% changed water. But others might want to pitch in incase i'm wrong. Don't want to over dose.

im also concerned because i might overdose my O in case i use the initial dose.. most of the thread i read does not detail that part of the dosage.. thanks anyway boss.. hope our fishes will heal up soon..im still looking forward to the replies of other to enlighten both of us and others

From doing some research on the net about the product it does say "repeat in 24 hours" so same dosage as the initial. To be honest people have told me that they have cured HITH without the use of products (if your afraid of using any). Just by keeping water in good condition throughout and varied diet is enough (non stress conditions). I don't think there is an off the shelf product that has been scientifically proven to cure HITH so you may want to think about it. My opinion would be to try the no product approach first and if is still getting worse add the metronidazole. But yh the answer to your question would be to repeat in 24hours with same dosage as initial with partial water change.


"Metronidazole exerts a bactericidal action on gram positive and some gram negative bacteria. Useful for control of some common bacterial fish diseases including aeromonas and pseudomonas genera and mysobacterial group (gill diseases, chondrococcus). Add one tablet (250 mg) into aquarium for each 10 gallons of water to be treated. Repeat in 24 hours. It is suggested that a partial water change be made between treatments. While duration of treatment depends on type and severity of infection, it is recommended that extended medication baths continue for a minimum of 5 days & for not more than 10 days. Discontinue treatment if no improvement is noted within 5 days. To remove harmless yellow color, change 20% of water and use charcoal filter until clear."

Its a repeat dose treatment. recommending a partial water change and a repeat dose, the repeat dose is the same amount as the 1st dose you used. you could also dilute and soak food (pellets) as metronidazole isn't very water soluble and is better eaten. if you use feeder fish crush an pack small amount inside. usually you need daily repeats over 5 days with partial water changes. if you don't notice a change after 5 days its not likely going to work. if you notice a change contiue for as long as 10 days no longer. I think it stains yellow too but comes off but dont hold me to "comes off". )) good luck

of medicine.... i had used only methylene blue so far... all my fishes problem
had been resolved with pristine water, pure salt, and water temperature....
