Hello, i really need advice on this one, i purchased 2 oscars about 2 months ago from a pet store.... both were in the same tank together and both are simular in size. They looked perfectly healthy when i purchased them, but in the last couple of days the bigger of the 2 is bullying the smaller one, it now had scales and white flesh bits missing from it. then hides at the bottom of the tank. What is causing this? as they never used to fight. i've tried to arrange the tank around to see if that helps ( done today) so i wont know any results until a couple of days,. there in a 80 gallon tank at the moment and i have posted another question on here about transfering them to m y 125 gallon tank. i know the water quality is good and i check it often. Help and advice needed asap on this one please. As i dont want the oscar to die.
Kind regards

leeroy

For what it is worth, this is a very common occurrence, so you are definitely not alone. I couldn't tell you exactly why your fish have decided to start fighting. There could be various reasons, it may well be a dominance issue, the larger oscar wants to become top dog in the tank, this does happen a lot, you often find that if you have the same species of fish, one of them is more dominant over the others and they will often back down at feeding time and maybe quite reclusive sometimes. Quite often, some fish will even pick on different species of fish in the tank as well. It is not natural to have fish in such a small environment so it's not surprising aggression breaks out quite a lot.

The best advice I can give you is to keep a close eye on them, then use your discretion. If you believe that the OSCAR is going to come to serious harm then you may have to re-home one of them. You've already rearranged your tank, this is something that works sometimes, but more often makes absolutely no difference whatsoever.

You may find that they calm down a little after a period of time.

There is one more thing you can try. Put a divider in and seperate the fish. Let the injured one heal and then put the aggressive fish in with him. If they still fight and one gets injured to the same extent then rehome one. If they get one (ignore little sqabbles) then remove the divider after 3 days. Hopefully they will get on but if things return to fighting then you have to accept they just wont get on
