I have a six month old red oscar, recently I noticed one of his gills are clamped shut. He acts normally and has no loss of appetite.

What should I do????

Welcome to the site

Can you please provide us with the following information, results for ammonia, nitrite, nitrates and pH. Also, aquarium size, filtration system, and any other fish you have

Until we have some more information, we can't really help you. One other thing, have a look at the other gill, what colour is it, it should be a nice red colour.

Tank is a 125 gal, Rena XP3 filter, Temp 79-80 PH- 7.0 and steady, Ammonia 0ppm. Nitrate and Nitrite are unknown.
All other fish appear to be doing fine.

1 red oscar- 5 in
1 midas 7 in
2 convicts 4 in
1 firemouth 2 in
1 jd 4in
1 jag 2 in
1 green terror 4 in

All co-exist just fine so far.

Both gills appear normal, as far as color goes.

Hopefully your nitrite is Zero and your nitrate isn't too high. Ammonia and pH are good

You also say that the gills looked fine and seem to be a good colour. In other words everything looks fine, apart from the fish clumping its gill plate? Well, I have absolutely no idea why your fish is behaving the way it is. I will have a good look through my health book tomorrow and see what it has to say. But if there are no visible signs of illness, and your water checks out okay then it's very difficult to actually determine what could be wrong.

No, overall the fish seems to act normally. The only time the gill moves is during feeding when he is chewing food. Upon closer inspection of the area surrounding the gill i noticed a very light white film around the outside of the gill.

to be honest with because i think i have seen this before i think

1. he may just be relaxed and breathe slow ( mine used to do that)

and 2. he may have been born that way
