My oscars and parrots have ich. I bought some meds(Rid Ich Plus by kordon) I am treating as directed. My question is about salt. Will it help my fish if I use both together. If you not familar with this med. in the UK., it contains Formaldehyde, formalin.and zinc-free chloride salt of malachite green. thanks

I am not familiar with that medication.

What I can tell you is that you should make sure you have plenty of oxygen in the water.
If you don't have an air bar, add one. These meds tend to deplete the oxygen in the water.

Raising the temp will also help. I would NOT add salt at this time.

Hope this helps.

Ich is simple to get rid of. You can either add meds, dont forget to take carbon out of the filter although you dont need carbon so dont put it back, add bio media instead. Only use carbon if you want to remove some meds. Often the meds will stain the silicone holding the tank together a very light blue

The other way is to raise the tank temperature to 30C.

Or you can do both

if you do both take into consideration that both increasing the temperature, and the meds, reduce disolved O2 content in the water. you may need to add extra aeration to your tank as compensation.

and if you are doing both and no air stone available, raise the discharge point of your
filter to create agitation in your tank....if you notice that your o gasp air on top,
it means you have thin layer of oxygen in the tank.

All of these sound like very logical options, yes I find salt and raising the temperature to be the most suitable choices. Remember the Salt content of the water will not evaporate out of the aquarium, be careful not to over saturate the aquarium. Good luck!

if you haven't already, read the article on the "health" tab. It is very informative and explains the cycle and when medication is most effective.

in my experience i havent needed salt at all to eliminate it. elevated temp and an extra bubbler usually is enough.

I just got over with the ich issue and I used Rid-ich. My ich was gone within a week from raising the temp and doing a gravel clean 25% water change before each time I put in the meds. Remember to do this even 3 days after ich is gone off the fish to make sure its dead.
