A couple of weeks ago my oscar scratched his eye. Not on the lense, but on the top where his eye projects from his head (if that makes any sense). Since you can't put a bandaid on a fish, I just put some stress coat in the tank along with the ich meds we have been giving them (yeah, we're still fighting the ich). I've been doing partial water changes to keep the water clean and lessen the chance for infection, but the scratch turned into a tear and his whole eye swelled up. So, I stopped the ich meds, changed the water, and proceeded with broad spectrum meds that is supposed to cure protozoan, bacterial, and fungal infections along with the usual dose of stress coat. His eye stayed swollen, the lense got cloudy, and the tear got bigger. Otherwise, he acted normal. Last week he had a small trail of flesh (eye insides?) coming from the tear. He has now lost all vision in that eye. The swelling has gone down and most of the excess flesh is gone, but now he's acting sick. For the past 2 days he has been laying at the bottom of the tank in the corner, leaning against the side. He will still swim to the top for feeding, but doesn't eat as much or as aggressively as he used to. He's not gasping, his breathing is slow and even. I'm not sure what's wrong with him (other than his obvious eye problem) or what to do. Need help, I really don't want him to die. Below is a picture of the affected eye. It is a side view. The lense of his eye points forward and the tear now goes all the way from the top to the back/bottom of his eye.
As for how he got the injury in the first place, I don't know. There is nothing sharp in the tank. Best I can figure is that he was scratching (from the ich) and cut himself on an errant rock.
