TOPIC: please help me with my tiger oscar

please help me with my tiger oscar 2 years, 4 months ago #70732

Ive had my two tiger oscar for 8 weeks now bought them both at bout 3inch..1 week after getting them home i started to notice little white spots on the side of the oscar, i left it for a couple of days and i could start to notice it more. so i called the store were i bought my oscar and he told me it sounds like white spots. So i bought some multi cure and did a 25% water change before putting it in the water. 3 days later i did a 50% water change and added more multi cure. This did not seem to work at all so i called the fish shop back and i bought some white spot 3 day medication and some stress guard. I went away for 4 days and when i came back my oscar condition had become sooo much worse.

My oscar has white scab like soars on his fins near his head on the side of his body now.

I took him back to wear i bought him and ask them to do some thing. first they told me he had hole n the head...then they told me that because i had gone away for 4 days the two oscar got hot in the tank because the house was locked up and that they were probably fighting!!

Now i find it impossible for the sores to be from fighting for 2 reasons 1) the other oscar is way smaller than this oscar 2)they do not look like something they would be caused from fighting.

So...the pet shop made up some medication dont know what it was and told me to put it in the tank and to wait for 5 days. so i did and the oscar started to look like he was getting better...but now it looks like its startin to get worse. help i dont know what to do???

also they did a water test at the shop every thing is all good with the water

the temp is 30 degrees i vacum it often and i have a canister filter and a 200l tank.

PLEASE HELP I DONT LIKE SEEING HIM LIKE THIS AND WHAT TO KNOW IF I SHOULD JUST PUT HIM DOWN

welcome to the site,I wish it was under better circumstances

Okay, you have had the fish for eight weeks, did you cycle the tank before putting the fish in? Also, we're going to need to know what the water conditions are exactly. So that will mean testing for Ammonia, nitrite, nitrates and pH

Are there still white spots on the fish? It would be very helpful to see a photograph, at least it would give us a bit of an idea of what we are dealing with.

How big is your tank, and what kind of filtration are you using? Could you also tell us what the temperature of your water is?

Sorry for all the questions, we need to try and build up a picture of your situation, as it stands we don't really know anything.

okay so i have a 4ft 200l fish tank

i cycled the tank 4 11 days prior to putting in the fish i filled it put a lil fish food every couple of days and just let the filter run.

i am using a aqua 1000 Canister filter system

the temp was 26 but the fish shop told me to turn up to 30 degrees

the spot are still on the fish but i wouldnt really call them spots more sores or scabs but they are white in colour.

Um i havnt got a water test kits myself but i have taken a sample to the shop and they did test for every thing u said and every thing was were it was supose to be, i will buy one though because i will need it anyways.

There are two fish in the tank one is an albino tiger and the other just a plain tiger. Te black oscar is the one will all the sores but the albino has started to look like he does have some sores but because he is white/pale yellow it is hard to tell nothin like the balck one though.

The feeding matterns in both fish have not changed at all and they are still eating as normal. When i first bought them i bought 20 feeder fish aka guppies i think and then was just feeding them Hikara Cichlid and Hikara Cichid Gold. When i went away for the 4 days i put 40 feeders in there. I have started to start feeding them a lil bit of fresh raw chicken breast and trying them on green peas.

i know its hard to picture what it looks like without a lic but he swim around and i cant get a clear one a will try and upload a short vid clip though so that may help,

thank you for replying

Am I correct in saying that you said you cycle tank for 11 days? Basically running the filter? So after 11 days you put your fish in? I'm sorry to have to tell you but that is not cycling your tank. It takes approximately 6 to 8 weeks to cycle a tank properly. It could well be that your tank is cycled now. However the problem is, your fish would have been put at risk during this process because the water conditions were probably not very good for quite a few weeks and you didn't realise this.

Okay, you need a test kit, it's very difficult to actually help of knowing the exact water conditions, fish stores are notorious as for giving out erroneous information.

However, they are correct in advising you to raise the temperature of the water to 30°C. This will actually speed up the life cycle of the white spot parasite. Have you been cleaning your filters at all?

How are the fish in themselves, are they eating? Do the fish seem to be breathing heavily at all? If you try to post a photo, it didn't work. Try using photo bucket

okay well im all new to this whole big fish tank thing i had gold fish my whole life lol.

Where i bought the fish from and the tank they told me that 11 days was enough and they tested the water and said it was fine.

I will get a test and give the results when i have them. the fish them selves are fine eating well very active the albina is a lil less active and eats less than the black one and has not grown as much as the black one.

i have cleaned the filter but when i do i fill a bucket with the tank water and rinse evrything in that till its clean i dont use normal tap water.

i have videos of them but im not quite sure how to send them to u they are in my computer

Unfortunately they were incorrect in telling you that it only takes 11 days. Have a look at photo bucket, you can upload photos and videos here. Get those test kits and tell us what your water is doing

hello, there.
Looking at the pic i'd say it looks like HITH more than white spot.
WS looks like grains of salt, while HITH looks like scoops of skin are taken out.
i aggree with the rest, we need you to get a testkit to provide us with info to pinpoint the problem.
How many waterchanges do you do, any how much water do you change?
Do you use prime before putting new water in the tank?
Keeping your water in the best possible condition will increase the chances of survival for your fish.
btw Welcome!

i do agree it is HITH.... while waiting for further evaluation, a big water change is a must to comfort your fishes...pristine water and varied food is the first defense against any fish illnesses. as long as it is taking foods, it has big chance to survive....
